some cool things about mudskippers

They can live in saltwater, freshwater, and even out of water (for a period of time)
They fill their gill chambers with water (aka their own oxygen tanks) so that they can breathe on land. They also can absorb oxygen through blood-rich membranes (back of their mouth & throat) and capillary rich-skin (aka keeping their skin moist)
They use their pectoral fins to “walk” on land
They move faster above water
They can “skip” (picture 5) on land to avoid predators
During mating season, the male colour brightens (picture 4)

A fisherman working off the Florida Keys recently caught a bull shark, then proceeded opened it up to find that it contained two live fetuses, including one highly unusual one with two heads. We have probably all seen this adorable video of the slow loris being tickled or even this one of a slow loris holding a tiny umbrella, but these seemingly innocent videos are actually the result of incredible amounts of animal cruelty.

The Slow Loris is a nocturnal primate from Southeast Asia but thanks to the millions of hits on youtube, slow lorises have become a “must have pet” and are being plucked from their natural habitat and sold for upto £3,500 ($5,500US)Now you would be lucky to see a slow loris in the wild, these beautiful creatures are endangered.
If this wasn’t bad enough, what these people do to these animals before they are “pet-ready” is so much worse.

slow lorises have a toxic bite, and because of this before they are sold they have their teeth ripped out with pliers or nail clippers so that they don’t cause damage to their “owners”.

This horrible process often causes infection and slow and painful deaths to the lorises.

They are also NOCTURNAL animals, which is why in the videos they are not just being “cute” these animals are disoriented and BLINDED by the bright light.These harmless little animals suffer terrible stress from exposure to the sunlight at these markets where they are dumped in cramped cages. These timid creatures normally move about quietly in the darkness of the night.
‘The markets, where they are surrounded by other animals and people, are a nightmare for them. Tragically, many of them die from trauma even before they have been sold.
although there is a global high protection order under the endangered species conventions, that doesn’t stop them being abducted and sold on the black market.
Few to no lorises can be found in the wild today, suggesting that the illegal trade may be the cause of the population decline. They are now feared to be on the verge of extinction, which is very serious
all because people want to keep these guys as pets.

When will people learn to just leave animals in the wild, why is there such an obsession with “owning” exotic pets. Your greed and selfishness has put so many animals on the verge of inexistance. You have no right to steal someone from their home and MUTILATE their body, cause them stress and even death all because you want a cute little pet.

Last year, when word first leaked about this plan, almost one million Avaaz members rallied to our aid. Your attention and the storm it created forced the government to deny the plan, and set them back months. But the President has waited for international attention to die down, and now he’s revived his plan to take our land. We need your help again, urgently.

President Kikwete may not care about us, but he has shown he’ll respond to global media and public pressure — to all of you! We may only have hours. Please stand with us to protect our land, our people and our world’s most majestic animals, and tell everyone before it is too late. This is our last hope:

Our people have lived off the land in Tanzania and Kenya for centuries. Our communities respect our fellow animals and protect and preserve the delicate ecosystem. But the government has for years sought to profit by giving rich princes and kings from the Middle East access to our land to kill. In 2009, when they tried to clear our land to make way for these hunting sprees, we resisted, and hundreds of us were arrested and beaten. Last year, rich princes shot at birds in trees from helicopters. This killing goes against everything in our culture.

Now the government has announced it will clear a huge swath of our land to make way for what it claims will be a wildlife corridor, but many suspect it’s just a ruse to give a foreign hunting corporation and the rich tourists it caters to easier access to shoot at majestic animals. The government claims this new arrangement is some sort of accommodation, but its effect on our people’s way of life will be disastrous. There are thousands of us who could have our lives uprooted, losing our homes, the land on which our animals graze, or both.

President Kikwete knows this deal would be controversial with Tanzania’s tourists - a critical source of national income - and does not want a big PR disaster. If we can urgently generate even more global outrage than we did before, and get the media writing about it, we know it can make him think twice. The Endorois people (also in Kenya) were removed from their sacred land in the 1970s under similar circumstances & for similar motives (the establishment of parks for colonial tourists.

This is Peanut the turtle, shortly after being found in Missouri in 1993. She was taken to to a zoo in St. Louis where the six-pack ring was removed.
It seems that she was trapped in the plastic ring as a young turtle and was unable to free herself. Subsequently her shell moulded itself to the plastic ring and she grew in the strange shape you see here.
Unfortunately the damage is permanent, but peanut is expected to live a long life and today she serves as a mascot for the fight against beach littering.
